About Prahran

Prahran, a former municipality and inner suburb of Melbourne, approximately 5 kilometres south-east of the city centre. Pur-ra-ran, a Boonwurrung term that was assumed to mean “land partly encircled by water,” is the origin of Prahran’s name. When the suburbs were first named, the spelling was supposed to be Praharan and pronounced Pur-ra-ran, but a spelling error on a government document led to the name Prahran. As of late, the term “Pur-ra-ran” has been recognised as a transliteration of the Aboriginal word for the Yarra River, “Birrarung”.

Throughout Prahran, you’ll find a smattering of modest (and often hidden) gardens. Near Grattan Street and Greville Street are the old Greville Botanical Garden and the new “Grattan Gardens”. To what was once an open area with playgrounds and an old pavilion, subdivisions have made their way in. A historic church has been turned into the Chapel Off Chapel theatre, which has some of Victoria’s greatest vert skateboarding facilities, as well as a small garden. With a circular row of London plane trees and an angel monument in the centre, the Victoria Gardens off High Street are a relic of the Victorian period. Even though Prahran’s Cato Street parking has been transformed into an urban area called Prahran Square, Orrong Romanis Park remains the city’s biggest green space.
